Inspection Systems

Product Details

The OASIS is a premier optical profile
inspection system that combines accuracy and precision with a
fast, easy to use operator interface created by George Products
Company, Inc.

Oasis Micrometer

The Oasis works by utilizing an LED light source to collimate
precise rays through a series of specially designed diffusers and
lenses that shine across the part to be inspected. That image is
then captured by a very specific telecentric optical lens, which
results in a perfect monochrome
profile of the inspected part. The part profile is then digitally
captured with a specially designed camera system and transferred
to the custom onboard computer where the software does the rest.
The image is analyzed and measurement data is displayed
on-screen.

The Oasis operates by casting a “Shadow” of a part to be
inspected and capturing that image in a digital format to be
analyzed by an on-board computer. The powerful software behind
the scenes converts the captured image into real dimensional data
that measures the part to an accuracy of 0.0002-inches!

When a part is placed in the Oasis, the user will see a digital
image of the profile of the part to be inspected. Oasis can
search and automatically find the appropriate part inspection
program that includes the dimensions the user wishes to measure.
The Oasis captures images in real-time, so regardless of the
number of dimensions, every time another part is placed into the
Oasis, each and every measurement is simultaneously and instantly
updated.

The software also includes a color-coded display panel that shows
the actual measured dimension and the user defined upper and
lower limits (tolerances). Pass/Fail indications are easily
identifiable for all measurements.

The Oasis features built-in quality control inspection reporting.
Measurements taken by the Oasis are recorded in the unit as parts
are inspected. Those dimensions can be imported into the Oasis
Inspection Reporting feature which will create a custom report
that can be printed or saved in the Oasis for future retrieval.
The Quality Control report can be created for the dimensions of a
single inspected part or for a group of parts in an entire
production nun.

HOW OASIS WORKS

The OASIS operates by casting a
“Shadow” of a part to be inspected and
capturing that image in a digital format to be analyzed by an
on-board computer.

Oasis Measurment Shadow

The powerful software behind the scenes converts the captured
image into real dimensional data that measures the part to an
accuracy of 0.0001-inches!

The process starts when the operator places a part to be measured
into the inspection zone of the OASIS. Take a look at the image
below…

How Oasis Works

Basic Operation…

  • Select a part inspection program…
  • Oasis can analyze the part’s shape and find the
    program!
  • Place the part in the inspection zone…
  • All measurements are instantly displayed on the screen.
  • Oasis will store all the measurements
  • You can print a QC report or move on to the next part!

The result – Fast, Accurate inspection of your
parts
. This fully automated non-contact video inspection
system is lightning fast and will simultaneously measure multiple
dimensions; all in an instant. Our combination of an engineered
light source, precision optics, and powerful programming come
together to yield an accuracy of 0.0001-inches

SOFTWARE TOOLS & PROGRAMMING

The first time that you inspect a part, you’ll have to tell the
OASIS which dimensions you want to measure and what the nominal
dimension is supposed to be – including adding tolerances so the
OASIS can automatically give you not only the actual measurement,
but also a Pass/Fail indication and inspection report!

Dimensioning tools are provided to perform various types of
measurements. You can drag-and-drop the tools and position them
anywhere on the profile image of the part to be inspected. The
available tools are shown below…

Oasis Tools Example

Each tool can be set with a nominal dimension as well as warning
and tolerance limits. The measurements are also shown on the
color-coded Status Display Panel. See image above..

ACCURACY TESTING

Accuracy testing was performed by using the OASIS to measure the
diameter of 0.3750″ dia gage pins. The testing was performed
using 10 Parts, 3 Trials, and 3 Operators. The Parts and
Operators were sequenced in random order.

Following are the results of the testing:

  • Accuracy = 0.0001″ (2.54 microns)
  • Repeatability = 0.0001″ (2.54 microns)
  • Reproducibility = 0.00004″ (1.02 microns)
  • Resolution = 0.0001″ (2.54 microns)

NOTE: These are total values,
NOT +/- values.

REPORTING

Speed, Accuracy, Reliability…

These are the features of the OASIS that make it a leader of the
pack in the Optical Inspection industry. Don’t forget to add
Functionality to that list!

Now that you have your data, you want to be able to do something
with it! The OASIS includes data acquisition and inspection
reporting that’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.

1. Acquire the part measurement and save it in the OASIS…
2. Open the built-in reporting program and import your
data…
3. Print the inspection report, and/or save it in the OASIS.

OASIS OPTICS

The optical system is one of the most important components in
providing accurate measurements. The video processor relies on a
quality and exact image to detect edges with a high degree of
accuracy. The OASIS optical system provides the following
features:

Ultra Low Distortion – 0.02% Maximum
Temperature Compensation
Constant Magnification
Round Edge Compensation

Ultra Low Distortion

The ultra low distortion of the OASIS optical system permits
accurate measurements anywhere within the field of view.

In other systems that have higher optical distortion, the same
measurement may appear larger or smaller in different areas of
the screen. Systems with higher distortion require the use of a
master grid to measure the error and compensate for it. With
Ultra Low Distortion, the Oasis requires no such compensation,
providing absolute accuracy.

Temperature Compensation

As the ambient temperature varies, the distance between elements
of the optical system changes because of the slight expansion of
the metal holding it together. This expansion can cause changes
in magnification, focus and distortion, which ultimately affect
the accuracy of the measurements.

The OASIS employs a temperature compensated optical system that
minimizes the effects of temperature variations to a negligible
level, providing accurate results over a broad range of operating
temperatures.

Constant Magnification

Standard lenses have a conical field of view, such that objects
appear to be smaller when they are farther away from the camera
and larger as they get closer. This means that in order to get
exact measurements, the part must be positioned exactly at the
focal plane of the lens. Furthermore, if the edges are not at the
same focal plane, errors due to magnifications will result.

The OASIS uses telecentric optics, which means that the image is
formed only by rays that are perpendicular to the lens. The size
of the image is not dependent of the distance to the object.
Therefore, accurate readings can be guaranteed for a part
position positioned anywhere in the Inspection Zone of the Oasis.

Round Edge Compensation

Edges produced by round surfaces are difficult to image
accurately. There are many reasons for this effect, but the worst
offender is light reflecting at an angle of the rounded surface
that makes it appear smaller than it really is. The error of this
effect varies with part position and surface radius, making it
almost impossible to compensate for electronically.

A possible alternative would be to use collimated light (a light
source that produces a light beam of parallel rays) to eliminate
this effect. This works well, but unfortunately it creates a new
problem: diffraction. As the parallel rays pass through the edge,
they are diffracted into several small angle rays that cause
interference fringes at the camera. The interference fringes make
it virtually impossible to determine an exact edge position
within a pixel.

The OASIS solves these challenges with its Round Edge
Compensation technology. The light source of the Oasis produces a
beam of light that is collimated in nature, but produces limited
angle rays that eliminate the diffraction problems created by
pure collimated light.

The result – the Oasis is capable of
accurately detecting the edges, and therefore the dimensions, of
even the most challenging part profiles.
